EV Incentives in Ontario

  • Plug’n Drive in collaboration with Clean Air Partnership is offering a $1000 incentive for a used fully electric vehicle with a re-sale sticker price below $50,000 (CDN) purchased on or after April 14, 2019. Drivers can receive an additional $1000 if they scrap and replace a gasoline or diesel vehicle and purchase a used EV, for a combined total of $2000 towards a used EV. You must take the Used EV Incentive seminar to qualify for the incentive.

Federal

  • NRCan's Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) will offer up to $130 million to reduce the cost of purchasing and installing EV charging for station owners and operators. ZEVIP provides up to $5,000 per L2 connector and between $50,000 and $100,000 per DC fast charger depending on the power level, up to 50% of eligible project costs. Eligible applicants include public, private, or not-for-profit entities and additional incentives are available for indigenous businesses and communities. Applications will be evaluated competitively and are due on September 19, 2024.

  • The Federal Government’s 2016 budget announced that Accelerated Capital Cost Allowances (ACCA) will extend to electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and energy storage equipment. In the case of electric vehicle charging stations, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has created two unique classes, 43.1 and 43.2. Electric vehicle charging stations set up to supply at least 90 kW of continuous power will be eligible for inclusion in Class 43.2 with a CCA rate of 50%. Those charging stations set up to supply more than 10 kW but less than 90 kW of continuous power will be eligible for inclusion in Class 43.1 with CCA rate of 30%.
  • Indigenous Clean Energy’s (ICE) Charge Up program has $1.6M available to fund up to 75% of the cost to install EV chargers for First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities, businesses, and Friendship Centers. Funding limits are up to $7,500 per Level 2 port and up to $99,999 per DCFC of EV charging station. Indigenous business applicants may be non-profit or for-profit but must be legal entities, validly incorporated or registered in Canada. New equipment can be installed at multi-unit buildings of 3 or more units, public places, workplaces, on-street parking, and in support of light-duty fleets. Applications will be assessed monthly until all funding has been allocated. Please note funding is for charger installation only and does not cover ongoing maintenance and operating costs. For Indigenous organizations, Charge Up funding is stackable with other funding, as long as the funding received does not exceed 100% of project costs, although Charge Up is not stackable with any other programs that include ZEVIP funding. Funding is first come first serve and projects much be completed by October 2024.

Federal

  • The federal iZEV Program provides an incentive of up to $5000 for new battery-electric or longer range plug-in hybrid vehicles (at least 15kWh), and up to $2500 for shorter range plug-in vehicles. To be eligible for the $5,000 incentive a zero-emission car must have a base model MSRP less than $55,000 with higher priced versions up to a max MSRP of $65,000 also eligible. Larger zero-emission vehicles (e.g., SUVs, minivans and pick-up trucks) must have a base model MSRP under $60,000 with higher priced versions up to a max of $70,000 also eligible.

Incentives are limited to one per individual. Businesses and provincial and municipal governments are limited to 10 incentives, but will be ineligible for the tax write-off. Business not taking advantage of the iZEV program will be eligible for a tax write-off for the purchase of both new and used light, medium and heavy duty vehicles.

Currently, there are no incentives available in your area. However, transportation is changing rapidly and we update this page frequently. Please check back often for the latest information. In the meantime, feel free to edit the letter below to let your legislators know that the time for e-mobility is now.

Dear [Name of Representative]:

My name is [Your Name] and l live in [City, State/Province]. My organization, [Name of Company], is interested in investing in electric vehicle (EV) charging for our [Employees/Customers/Residents), but I recently learned there aren’t any incentives available in my area to help offset the costs of purchasing and installing EVSE equipment.

As you are no doubt aware, the transportation sector is responsible for the largest share of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, contributing to climate change and pollution, which are bad for people’s health and bad for business.

I am proud of where I live. I don’t want to see us fall behind the rest of the country and the world by failing to keep pace with changes that are both necessary and inevitable.

I urge you to consider introducing legislation that would offer incentives such as tax credits, rebates or grants to those of us who are eager to make [City or Region] a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable place to live for every citizen. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your efforts in this matter.

Very truly yours,

[Your Name]
