How do I start a charging session at a ChargePoint station without a screen?

Last updated: 6/4/2024

If you are at a ChargePoint station with an orange faceplate without a screen, you can start a charging session a few different ways.

If the station has a QR code:

In North America, you can start a charging session at a ChargePoint station without a screen with Tap to Charge.

Here's how to start charging:

  1. Scan the QR code on the station.
  2. Get the ChargePoint app and sign up or log into your account.
  3. If you create an account for the first time, set up Tap to Charge by adding ChargePoint to your Apple Wallet (for iPhone) or turning on NFC (for Android).
  4. If you already have a ChargePoint account and haven’t set up Tap to Charge, select the Account tab at the bottom, Manage Cards, then Set it up.
  5. Add ChargePoint Pass as a card to your Wallet.

Tip: Setting up Tap to Charge is different for iPhones and Android phones, so follow the directions in your app.
  6. Once you’ve set up Tap to Charge, hold your phone up to the station’s reader to unlock the connector. Make sure you've turned on NFC and your screen for Android. For iPhone, if you’re not using Face ID, double-check that your finger is on the home button to use Touch ID.
  7. Once you hear the station beep, plug in your car and go about your day.
  8. When you’re notified that your EV has finished charging, move your car so others can charge.

Tip: Some EVs require you to unlock your doors to remove the charging plug and return it to the station.

If the station has no QR code or screen:

Stations without a screen or QR code are typically in a private use area. To start charging, you will need to use your ChargePoint RFID card or remote start in the mobile app if the station owner has granted you access.

Here’s how to start charging with a ChargePoint card:

  1. Tap your activated ChargePoint card (make sure to activate it) on the card reader symbol on the station.
  2. Once you hear the station beep, plug in your car and go about your day.
  3. When you’re notified that your EV has finished charging, move your car so others can charge.

Tip: Some EVs require you to unlock your doors to remove the charging plug and return it to the station.

Here’s how to start charging remotely from the app:

  1. Open the ChargePoint app and select the station from the map.
  2. Click Start Charging.
  3. Once you hear the station beep, plug in your car and go about your day.
  4. When you’re notified that your EV has finished charging, move your car so others can charge.

Tip: Some EVs require you to unlock your doors to remove the charging plug and return it to the station.
