If you’re of a certain age, you grew up knowing that Snoopy’s alter-ego was a World War I flying ace and Lucy was never, ever going to let Charlie Brown kick that football. Like most kids I grew up with, I was a Peanuts fan, so those memories came flooding back when I found out its creator’s namesake, the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport recently installed additional ChargePoint® solutions to meet growing demand.
Schulz grew up in Minnesota, but moved to Sonoma County, California in the 1950s, where he spent the rest of his career until his death in 2000. That same year, the County Board of Supervisors honored their favorite son by renaming the airport for him. Sonoma County was a fitting place for Schulz, who was an environmentalist ahead of his time. The county is fiercely proud of its sustainability efforts, which included securing an air district grant to install some of the earliest electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the state. Those were (and still are) ChargePoint solutions.
Once a hidden gem in the middle of beautiful California Wine Country, the airport has been increasingly attracting customers in recent years. Folks tired of battling crowds and long lines at larger Bay Area terminals found they could save time and hassle—and maybe even enjoy a glass of Chardonnay—by driving a little bit out of their way. But, for some of the more nervous EV drivers, the longer commute to the airport meant a little more range anxiety; that nagging feeling they’d run out of juice on the way home from their trips. Although range anxiety sounds like a perfect 21st century problem for Charlie Brown (who once said, “My anxieties have anxieties”), most people would rather relax. Fortunately, ChargePoint Power Management features allow airport administrators to manage the power to each solution, making sure everyone gets their fair share of fuel, no matter how long they’re parked.
“It’s getting to the point where EV charging is going to be an amenity like having free Wi-Fi in the terminal. You’ve got to have it if you’re going to compete.” – Jon Stout, Airport Manager, Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County Airport
Even Charlie Brown could rest easy knowing Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport won’t pull the football away when it comes to EV charging. By partnering with ChargePoint, the airport’s EV-driving travelers know they can get where they’re going and back again with nary a care in the world. Now you know. That’ll be 5 cents please.
