ChargePoint Statement on ISO 15118 White Paper
ChargePoint shares the industry’s goal of enabling the mass adoption of electric mobility. For more than a decade, we have designed, developed and implemented solutions to make it easier for businesses and drivers to make the shift to electric. With millions of sessions per month and with a driver plugging in approximately every two seconds, we are proud of the progress that has been made. As the EV market continues to grow and evolve, we remain committed to working with industry stakeholders to continue to build out the fueling network that will power the transition to electric mobility and pave the way to mass adoption of electric vehicles. ChargePoint, and our peers in the industry, have embraced this commitment for many years and together have enabled millions of drivers and countless businesses to make the switch.
In 2014, ISO 15118 was developed, creating a framework that would enable an electric vehicle to communicate with an EV charging station, with the goal of making it easier to charge by allowing a driver to plug in and charge their vehicle without the need for an app or RFID card.
Recently, a proposal for the implementation of ISO 15118 was announced, sometimes referred to as “Plug & Charge.” While ChargePoint and many in the industry embrace the spirit of ISO 15118, there are significant gaps in the current proposed implementation. These shortcomings sacrifice security and privacy, will force drivers and station owners to forgo benefits and features they’ve come to expect, all while eliminating individual control and choice for drivers and businesses. Ultimately, an easy charging experience doesn’t have to come with significant sacrifices.
This is a pivotal time for electric vehicles and it’s imperative that we get the implementation of ISO 15118 right or risk limiting the EV industry for years to come.
Given the importance of this, ChargePoint worked with third party experts DigiCert (the world’s leading provider of solutions for identity and encryption) and Eonti (the industry-leading cyber security consulting and trust management services firm) to evaluate recent proposals. The recently released white paper, “Practical Considerations for Implementation and Scaling ISO 15118 into a Secure EV Charging Ecosystem,”evaluates the proposed implementation and outlines significant flaws that must be addressed to ensure the long term viability of the category and ensure that fundamental protections, benefits, and control for drivers and businesses remain.
ChargePoint embraces the spirit of making the switch to electric easy for businesses and drivers and believes it is critical that cross-industry collaboration ramp up significantly to address these critical gaps in any implementation of the standard.
