ChargePoint Applauds CPUC for Approving Innovative Pilot to Accelerate EV Charging Stations in San Diego

Twin CPUC Decisions Over the Past Two Weeks Turn Promise of EV Charging in Southern California into Reality

Campbell, Calif. – ChargePoint today applauded the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for its unanimous vote to authorize San Diego Gas & Electric to develop a pilot program to deploy 3,500 electric vehicle charging stations in the San Diego area. This comes on the heels of a separate CPUC decision two weeks ago to approve a ground-breaking proposal from Southern California Edison to deploy 1,500 charging stations across its territory.

“These two decisions will turn the promise of an innovative electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Southern California into a reality,” said Pasquale Romano, ChargePoint’s CEO. “They will accelerate the deployment of charging stations, speed up the adoption of EVs, improve health and lead to real reductions in the pollution that causes global warming.”

“While we feel Southern California Edison’s pilot is a model program that should be adopted in states across the nation. SDG&E’s program, with its “Vehicle Grid Integration," is incredibly innovative, featuring dynamic pricing that creates incentives for charging when renewable energy is most available. Taken together, these two programs represent a giant leap forward for EV Charging in Southern California.”

If the two pilots are successful, the two utilities will deploy close to 40,000 additional charging stations over the course of the next few years, while preserving customer choice, innovation and a competitive EV charging market.
