ChargePoint Training & Certification program Frequently asked questions

Certification program

Is this the same program as the ChargePoint installer certification?

The ChargePoint Training & Certification program supersedes our previous installer certification and adds information and material about station maintenance, servicing, troubleshooting and much more to the curriculum. If you’re interested in installing ChargePoint stations, please enroll in the ChargePoint Training & Certification program and look for the microcredentials that cover station installation.

Do I need to be ChargePoint-certified to work on ChargePoint stations?

Yes, you will need to be a ChargePoint-certified technician before you can work on ChargePoint stations.

What is the difference between this program and other certification agencies?

ChargePoint is the only EVSE manufacturer with a program of this scale and depth. As a complement to courses from organizations such as SAE and EVITP, our program aims to balance general electrical knowledge with actionable, product-specific details.

How much time will it take to get ChargePoint-certified?

Each certification exam takes approximately 90 minutes. In addition, candidates must acquire a microcredential corresponding to the desired product or service. Typical microcredential courses range between 45 and 60 minutes.

Is prior experience in electrical work necessary to complete the program?

No. However, prior experience in electrical work or related fields is highly recommended and will help you pass the certification exams.

What is the ChargePoint Training & Certification program?

The ChargePoint Training & Certification program helps develop the next generation of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) field technicians to install, inspect, operate and maintain EV charging equipment. This program helps customers achieve business outcomes by installing and supporting reliable charging stations throughout the product lifecycle. The proprietary curriculum enables the widespread adoption of safe, efficient and sustainable charging infrastructure while fostering innovation, environmental responsibility and consumer confidence.

Are installer PINs still required?

An installer PIN is no longer necessary because all our station activation services now reside in the ChargePoint Installer app. Follow the prompts in the app to complete the activation process after installing the charging station.

Why should I get a ChargePoint certification?

A ChargePoint certification signals that a technician can safely and correctly perform services on EVSE. A certification is required for all technicians to install, maintain and service ChargePoint products. This also provides warranty protection and ensures that a technician has demonstrated knowledge of proper environmental safety and preservation practices.

As a ChargePoint-certified technician, you will have an advantage when competing for business as it qualifies you to work on one of the largest networks of EV stations in the world and maintain compliance with ChargePoint warranty terms. Certified technicians are likely to experience increased opportunities as ChargePoint actively refers customers to its best-performing business partners and service professionals. With superior training and demonstrated knowledge and experience, your excellent service can deliver superior customer loyalty and satisfaction, enhancing your brand name and credibility.

Does acquiring the ChargePoint certification make me an approved ChargePoint Operation & Maintenance (O&M) partner?

No. Please read this for more information on the ChargePoint Partners Program.

Please note that if you are an existing O&M partner, we expect your technicians to complete the certification to continue your partnership with ChargePoint. If you are looking to join as a new ChargePoint O&M partner, your technicians will be required to become certified before your business partnership is approved.

Does acquiring the ChargePoint certification make me an Authorized Installation Partner (AIP)?

Installations can only be performed by technicians who have met the requirements of the ChargePoint Training & Certification program, but this does not make them an AIP.

To become an AIP, your organization will also need to enroll in the AIP program. For more information, please reach out to electrical@chargepoint.com.

Does acquiring the ChargePoint certification make me an Authorized Commissioning Partner (ACP)?

No. While the certification and corresponding commissioning microcredential qualify the individual as eligible to complete commissioning services, ACP is a term reserved for organizations that have entered an agreement with ChargePoint as a business partner. To become an ACP, your organization will also need to enroll in the ACP program. For more information, please reach out to electrical@chargepoint.com.

Getting Started

Who is the Training & Certification program designed for?

This program is designed for electrical contractor firms and technicians, transit and fleet operators, EVSE distributors, station owners and other professionals in the electrical and automotive sectors who aspire to specialize in the EV charging industry.

How do I get ChargePoint-certified?

The ChargePoint Training & Certification is a modular program made up of two components:

  • The AC and DC certifications
  • The ChargePoint product- and service-specific microcredentials.

How can I start the certification process for my staff?

Direct your staff to complete their profile registration to gain access to the Training & Certification program. Once registered, they can take a microcredential course and register for the AC and/or DC exam. Visit the Training and Certification webpage for more information.

What are the different types of certifications?

Our program offers AC and/or DC certification and microcredentials for each of our products. The available microcredentials include station installation, preventive maintenance, commissioning and corrective maintenance. Completing all the microcredentials for a given product qualifies an individual as a specialist for that product. Achieving the specialist level in all AC or all DC products qualifies an individual as an AC or DC expert, respectively.
