ChargePoint Welcomes CPUC Decision to Expand Utility Role for EV Charging

Campbell, Calif.– Today, California Public Utilities Commissioner Carla Peterman issued a historic proposed decision to expand the role of investor owned utilities in the deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The broad decision is a positive move for the EV market as it lifts limitations on the deployment of EV infrastructure by utilities. The Commission will now consider individual proposals from utilities on a case-by-case basis under the new guidelines that preserve competition and technology innovation in the market.

This decision comes after both San Diego Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison submitted filings to cover nearly $500 million and close to 40,000 EV charging ports in the state.

ChargePoint – the world’s largest EV charging network – actively participated in the Commission’s proceeding and strongly supports an opportunity for utilities to collaborate with the private sector and accelerate the installation of charging stations throughout the state.

“We applaud the Commission’s clear direction to expand the role of utilities while balancing the need to maintain a competitive environment to preserve innovation in the industry,” said Pasquale Romano, ChargePoint CEO. “We’re looking forward to continued collaboration with the utilities to transform transportation while promoting consumer choice and leveraging private investment.”
