ChargePoint Solves Home Charging for Apartments and Condos
- Property managers can now offer their residents a premium amenity – EV charging – with minimal effort.
- Apartment and condominium residents will have access to their own EV chargers at home, in their own assigned parking spaces.
- ChargePoint will provide fully-maintained charging stations with 24/7 support to resident EV drivers when they need it.
Campbell, Calif– ChargePoint, the world’s largest and most open electric vehicle (EV) charging network, today announced a new service program for apartments and condominiums which will allow residents to charge their EVs at home.
“ChargePoint is a trusted network with the most expansive collection of publicly available stations in North America and the largest community of drivers. Now, drivers living in apartments and condos will have access to the same network they use at work and around town with a personal charging station at their individual parking spot,” said ChargePoint CEO Pasquale Romano. “With no long-term commitment, 24/7 support and a charging station provided to the resident at no cost, we’re making it even easier for property owners to offer EV charging”.
Participating property managers will prep the individual parking spots with wiring for EV charging and set a price for electricity. ChargePoint will bill the resident a one-time activation fee and a monthly subscription fee for EV charging services. Included in this is a fully installed level 2 charging station with comprehensive 24/7 support. ChargePoint will also enable residents to pay the property owner for their energy usage using their ChargePoint account.
With no long-term contract, property managers and tenants can participate in the program on a month-to-month basis. If a resident moves, the charging station will simply be deactivated until another EV driving resident decides to subscribe to the service. Drivers will be able to manage all of their home and public EV charging through the same ChargePoint mobile application they already use to satisfy their charging needs at work or around town.
“Electric vehicles are here to stay and gaining in popularity. The competitive nature of the multi-family industry lends itself to adapting to consumer needs and allowing EV owners access to charging in the apartment environment seems a natural evolution. EV owners represent high quality residents and facilitating EV use helps us with our sustainability goals. It’s a win-win scenario,” says Rod Standard Development Director at Sobrato. “The ChargePoint Multi-family Home Service has given us an affordable and scalable program to offer a top-of-the-line-amenity to our residents.” Sobrato has been a ChargePoint customer for over four years with charging stations at 8 of its multi-family locations.
More than 2.3 million EVs are expected to be on U.S. roads by 2020, and 5 to 10 percent of these cars will be owned by residents of multifamily homes. According to a recent Department of Energy report, 80 percent of EV charging takes place at a driver’s home. For people living in apartments or condos, however, charging at home is often inconvenient or altogether unavailable. ChargePoint’s Multifamily Home Service addresses this problem by providing residents with dedicated EV chargers – giving them confidence that their home charger will always be available when they need it, in their own parking space. The service also provides a competitive advantage to forward-looking apartment and condominium property managers who can offer current and prospective residents an amenity that other complexes do not provide.
Today’s announcement builds on the aggressive expansion ChargePoint is making in the home EV charging market. Earlier this year, the company unveiled the world’s most attractive and advanced home EV charging station, ChargePoint Home, which plugs into a standard 240V outlet and has a universal J1772™ connector that is compatible with all cars and can be installed either indoors or outdoors. ChargePoint Home – which is designed for single-family residences – will be on the market this summer.
