ChargePoint Applauds Governor Brown For Signing Bill to Accelerate EV Charging

Legislation supports businesses and individuals who want to self-finance EV charging

Sacramento, Calif. – ChargePoint – the largest and most open electric vehicle (EV) charging network – commends Governor Brown for signing AB2565, which will allow commercial and residential tenants to install an EV charging station in a leased parking lot if the tenant is willing to pay for the cost of the station and installation. ChargePoint worked with the bill’s author, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, in drafting and driving AB2565 through the legislative process.

“Thanks to Governor Brown’s signature, California tenants will now be able to access EV chargingand participate in the growth of the EV industry by offering EV charging,” said ChargePoint CEO Pasquale Romano. “Just last week, California reached a milestone of 100,000 EVs sold, and the state now accounts for an estimated 40% of the total market for EVs. California is leading the way for a robust network of EV charging, which is critical to support the industry’s tremendous growth and reach the governor’s goal of 1.5 million EVs on California roads by 2025.”

Until now, lease restrictions could stop tenants from installing EV charging at their home or business. This legislation is especially important for apartment dwellers – who make up 40% of California residents – giving them the ability to install charging stations at their home.

“I want to join thousands of EV drivers who sent letters of support in thanking Assemblymember Muratsuchi for authoring AB 2565 to address this issue, and Governor Brown for his signature and support of the EV industry,” Romano said.

The California Energy Commission recently released an assessment of the EV infrastructure needed to meet California’s adoption goals. Prepared by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the assessment estimates between 806,000 and 876,000 residential charging stations are needed statewide by 2020.
